Title: The Catalyst
Author: Helena Coggan
Publisher: Candlewick Press
Release Date: October 11, 2016
Genre: Fantasy, Science Fiction

In a thrilling debut by sixteen-year-old Helena Coggan, a girl with a terrible secret is tested to her limits as her fractured world teeters on the brink of war.
Eighteen years ago, a dimensional break ripped open the sky, drawing humans into an ancient conflict. Otherworldly souls rained down and fused with those of people, dividing the population into the green-eyed, magical Gifted and the dark-eyed, nonmagical Ashkind. A devastating war followed, and the Gifted have managed a fragile peace ever since, largely through a brutal law enforcement organization known as the Department. Fifteen-year-old Rose's father, David, has a leading role in the Department. Rose and David are Gifted, but they are also something else-something terrible. Their lives depend on keeping it secret. But when a mysterious murder threatens to tear Rose's world apart, forcing long-buried secrets into the open, her loyalties are put to the test. How much does Rose really know about her father's past? How far is the Department willing to go to maintain order? And, when the time comes, who will Rose choose to protect?

**Thanks so much to the publisher for allowing me to read this in exchange for an honest review!**

I was so excited to start The Catalyst because the premise was absolutely mind boggling. The whole idea of Gifted people with magic just sounded so awesome!

The whole idea of the Gifted and the Ashkind was pretty awesome. I especially loved that the non-magical people had a name: Ashkind. I haven't read a book where the non-magical people had their own name like the magical folk since the muggles in Harry Potter.

The amount of mystery revolving around David and Rose was so intriguing. I know that the synopsis kind of says that they're different but they're gifted too. I don't really want to say too much-you'll have to read and find out for yourself!

The description kind of hides a big part of the novel, such as the fact that there are Angels. I haven't read that many books with angels besides Hush, Hush, so I thought that was so great.

Rose was more than just Gifted and different. She was freaking intelligent. I was so surprised when I read that she was only fifteen! She just had such a put-together demeanor and she even had a job pretty much. It was practically incredible.

It takes place in London. I LOVE LONDON. Needless to say, the setting was spectacular.

The Catalyst was honestly such a surprising book. It ended up being one that I'll never forget!
