She has six months before the Everneath comes to claim her, six months for good-byes she can’t find the words for, six months to find redemption, if it exists.

Nikki longs to spend these months reconnecting with her boyfriend, Jack, the one person she loves more than anything. But there’s a problem: Cole, the smoldering immortal who first enticed her to the Everneath, has followed Nikki to the mortal world. And he’ll do whatever it takes to bring her back- this time as his queen.

As Nikki’s time grows short and her relationships begin slipping from her grasp, she’s forced to make the hardest decision of her life: find a way to cheat fate and remain on the Surface with Jack or return to the Everneath and become Cole’s...
In Everneath by Brodi Ashton, Nikki Beckett has just woken up in the underworld after spending a long time attached to Cole. You see, Cole is an immortal of the underworld who has to feed off of the living in order to survive. Usually, the humans he feeds off of become much older after some of their life is taken. Nikki appears to be a special case, as she looks just the same as she did before she went in. This is very surprising, and so she is told that she could become the new queen of the underworld. First, she must overthrow the current queen with the help of Cole.

Nikki doesn't like Cole much, as he never really gave her all the information that she needed before she was sucked into this roller coaster of a life. Nikki appears to be changing into an immortal herself, and there isn't much that she can do to change it. Against Cole's wishes, Nikki decides to spend 6 months back in her regular life after a year has passed. Her father is relieved though angry when she finally returns home and everyone can't believe that Nikki Beckett is finally back. Everyone at school makes up lame excuses as to why she was gone. Then there's Jack. Jack was Nikki's boyfriend, and she tries to patch things up with him throughout her six months, though she never tells Jack that she's on a time limit. Nor does she tell him anything at all about where she had been in the last year... until it's too late.

Nikki was pretty popular until she disappeared. By the time she finally returned, she seemed to be a social outcast. Especially with the rumour mill running wild. I could definitely see her point of view when it came to Cole and Jack. Cole, who had kinda lied to her a few times, was definitely overshadowed by Jack. Jack and Nikki were a thing, so they have this special connection.

Jack kind of bothered me. I mean, he was really sweet and everything, but he almost acted like he didn't really want anything to do with Nikki though on the inside he really did. I guess he's good at hiding his feelings.

Cole was definitely my favorite character. He had his motives and he was very mysterious. Cole was just downright cool. I also felt as if he had his reasons for doing everything that he did. He pretty much told Nikki what was going to happen during the Feed, so she went into it knowing what she was getting into. It's not his fault that she doesn't what anything to do with him anymore. Nikki downright came to Cole and told him that she wanted to do the Feed. I guess you can see which character I am rooting for by looking at the sizes of these character paragraphs. :)

Everneath was a bit confusing in the beginning. I never really knew what the whole feed thing was until about halfway through the book. I was also rather confused with the whole underworld and the actual world. As the book went on, I definitely understood everything much better. The characters were really great... especially Jack and Cole. At times, I didn't know which one I was supposed to be rooting for. The kind, sweet Jack or the mysterious and sometimes rude Cole? I definitely enjoyed this novel. It was a very original twist on the Persephone myth. I also liked how the past and the present were intertwined throughout the novel. We got a chance to see Nikki before she met Cole, how she met him, and how she made it to the underworld with him while we also got to see what happened after she left the underworld.

  1. I agree with you about most of the book being kind of confusing. I thought most of it was just okay until everything started coming together with the Everneath and the Daughters of Persephone and everything. Then I thought it was really good and the ending made me so sad! Great review :)

  3. I really loved Jack-his feelings were so strong but he kept them buried to prevent getting hurt again. Didn't like Cole as I very rarely like the bad boy (exceptions off the top of my head are the very charismatic Warner from Shatter Me and the Darkling from Shadow and Bone, haven't read the second books yet).
