Title: Shiver
Author: Maggie Stiefvater
Publisher: Scholastic Press
Release Date: August 1, 2009
Source: Purchased
Edition: Hardcover (392 pages)
Genre: YA Paranormal Romance; Werewolves
Cover Review: This cover is one of my favorite covers ever. It's so simple and yet it's beautiful at the same time. There's a wolf and I absolutely love the red dot for the "i". Plus, it's blue!
Tagline: N/A
Series: Wolves of Mercy Falls #1
Main Characters: Grace Brisbane and Sam Roth
For years, Grace has watched the wolves in the woods behind her house. One yellow-eyed wolf--her wolf--is a chilling presence she can't seem to live without. Meanwhile, Sam has lived two lives: In winter, the frozen woods, the protection of the pack, and the silent company of a fearless girl. In summer, a few precious months of being human . . . until the cold makes him shift back again. Now, Grace meets a yellow-eyed boy whose familiarity takes her breath away. It's her wolf. It has to be. But as winter nears, Sam must fight to stay human--or risk losing himself, and Grace, forever.
Shiver is a book about werewolves. The thing is, these werewolves are unique and totally out of the box. Round of applause for Ms. Stiefvater! In Shiver, we follow both Grace and Sam, a girl and a werewolf. Grace has always watched the wolves every since she was younger, though one day she was taken by the wolves. She only remembers one wolf saving her. As she grows older, she always sees the same wolf outside. One day, she finds a guy outside her house, looking like he was shot by a bullet. He happens to smell like wolf and have eyes that look just like her wolf's eyes. She can't believe it, though she can't really contain her excitement. Her wolf is actually real and her obsession doesn't seem as strange anymore.

Sam, on the other hand, can only be human during the summer. He shifts when it gets too cold outside. He has never really talked to Grace because he knew that he would eventually have to leave her. Werewolves only have a certain lifespan between shifting of humans and werewolves before they completely stay werewolves. Therefore, Sam hasn't really grown close to anyone. He also has a very sad past and was bitten when he was really young.

This was the second time that I've read Shiver. I enjoyed it so much the first time that I wanted to read it again. It was so much better the second time! I absolutely adore Stiefvater's writing and her characters are amazing. I instantly fell in love with Sam and I easily related with Grace, as she cares deeply for her grades in school. I also loved how there were musical elements woven throughout the writing. Sam was a musician, so he was always singing songs or writing songs for Grace, his summer girl. I loved this book so much, and I highly recommend it! It was a great paranormal romance read with a unique twist. Definitely a great book for the winter!

Notable Quotes:
"Books are more real when you read them outside."
"It is possible to be in love with you just because of who you are."
"I was suddenly struck by how dissimilar we were. It occured to me that if Grace and I were objects, she would be an elaborate digital clock, synced up with the World Clock in London with technical perfection, and I'd be a snow globe-shaken memories in a glass ball."
Have you read this book? I'd love to hear your thoughts!

  2. I really enjoyed the werewolves in this book although I'm not normally the biggest fan of paranormal. They were unique and Stiefvater's writing is so lyrical and beautiful.
