Downright Discussions: Bookshelves?

This week on Downright Discussions, I decided to bring up the bookshelves talk. I can never decide how to arrange my bookshelves. I probably rearrange them at least once a week. I don't know if it is because I get bored of the view or what, but I never like how they are organized. Whether it be by size, publisher, author, cover color, genre, or even series.

My question is, how do you organize your bookshelves? Is there a certain way that you prefer? A way that is most logical? I bet I'm not the only one who is constantly changing how my shelves look. There is upsides and downsides to each choice that I've made for arranging my books.

Do you have any suggestions for Downright Discussions hosted on Downright Dystopian? Feel free to leave them in the comments!

  1. I love rearranging my bookshelves. By color, by series by size, by genre...but since I'm running out of space lately, I just have to stack them any way they fit :)

  2. I kind of just stuck in books wherever they fit and that's how I've kept doing it. If I move, I would consider redoing the shelves but as it is, I don't really have time to rearrange and make them look better.

  3. I'm constantly rearranging too! By genre, by author, and sometimes I split into read and tbr. Mostly I rearrange to try and make more room for all the books I seem to keep buying.

  4. Im so organized it drives people crazy lol. I have mine organzied by hardbacks/paperbacks/arc/galleys. Then break those down my genres. Then groups them by authors.

  5. I reorganize my shelves every few months. Usually I'll have separate shelves for the "read" and "to be read" books, and I try to group each shelf by series or by author. I have two full shelves dedicated to JD Robb!

  6. I reorganise them pretty often. I just can't decide whether it's more important for them to organised by genre or author. My top priority is long-term. I want series to end up together. And if I sort the books by author and then year, authors like Cassandra Clare will have their series all mixed up because they publish books of different series in the same year.

  7. I am kind of like you. My book shelves change maybe every few months cause I want to try something new. I go from. organizing them by color, to titles, to authors, to by size. and sometimes mixing all that in. The only thing that stays the some in my fiction and non-fiction to do not mix.

  8. You are right about not being the only one who is forever changing up the shelves to find something that works. Right now I have been donating books, other than complete collections, that I have already read. That frees things up a bit, but the only organized shelf that I have is the one for reviews. If I feel like reading something else, I have to go on a hunt. Not very effective.

  9. I've rearranged them so much over the years. It used to be by author, then by genre, then color, and now it's just based on wherever I have space. I'm getting a big new bookshelf soon, though, and I'll probably go back to organizing it by genre.

  10. I generally have mine separated into genres, and then into authors. It's difficult at uni though because we don't HAVE a book case. I just have two shelves in the cupboard in the hallway and a row on top of my chest of drawers in my room. So there isn;t a lot in the way of organisation here! At the moment it's just books I've read on the top shelf in the cupboard, books I have yet to read on the second shelf in the cupboard, and the books next on my list to read in my room.

Like you though, I get bored a lot - it's just a lot more fun to re-arrange at home than at uni where I only have a small number of books to play with anyway!

  12. Great topic - but I can never stay with one system! I'm always rearranging my books...which kind of annoys me. Right now I have one bookcase with my TBR books, sorted by standalones, sequels and the first books in series. The books I've read are organized by genre. Oh, and I have different shelves for my English books and the German ones :)

  13. I've had my books arranged by author for years, but a year or so ago, I put series in a different section. I also have a graphic novel section, and a whole shelf (spilling onto the floor) of TBR books.
