Book Review: The Future of Us by Jay Asher and Carolyn Mackler

Title: The Future of Us
Author(s): Jay Asher and Carolyn Mackler
Publisher: Razorbill
Release Date: November 21, 2011
Edition: Hardcover (356 pages)
Cover Review: I'm not a big fan of the cover, but I do love the font used for the title.
Main Character(s): Josh and Emma

"It's 1996, and Josh and Emma have been neighbors their whole lives. They've been best friends almost as long - at least, up until last November, when Josh did something that changed everything. Things have been weird between them ever since, but when Josh's family gets a free AOL CD in the mail, his mom makes him bring it over so that Emma can install it on her new computer. When they sign on, they're automatically logged onto their Facebook pages. But Facebook hasn't been invented yet. And they're looking at themselves fifteen years in the future.

By refreshing their pages, they learn that making different decisions now will affect the outcome of their lives later. And as they grapple with the ups and downs of what their futures hold, they're forced to confront what they're doing right - and wrong - in the present."

Story: One day, Josh gives Emma an AOL cd-rom. She tries it out on her new computer, and finds that she can somehow see herself on this website called "Facebook." She believes that it predicts the future, while Josh... well, not so much.

Throughout the whole novel, Emma keeps trying to change the future. They are never happy with the outcome. One minute Emma will be with one husband, and the next minute, it will be some other husband. Josh is perfectly happy with his future. He's with the most popular girl in the whole school, who he's never even talked to in his life. Plus, he's living the good life-his wife is rich.

I really enjoyed the story of this novel. I could definitely see how someone would try to keep changing their fate. It was very enjoyable, and I read it in less than 4 hours.

Characters: Josh and Emma were very funny. I knew all along that they'd end up together. I mean, they'd been best friends since they were young, how could they not end up together in the end?

I think I liked Josh better. He wasn't trying at all to change his future. He thought it should stay the way it was... but then again, he was with the popular girl.

Emma got on my nerves sometimes. She NEVER liked her future. She NEVER liked her husband. She always needed something better. When she saw that life wasn't working out, she tried her hardest to change it. Life is tough. She needs to learn to live with it.

All in All: I thought this was a good read. I mostly read it because the Facebook sections were fun to read.

Rating: 4/5 Lightning Bolts
